S&D Coffee and Tea has always recognized its role as a leader in the industry and community and the inherent responsibilities that title carries. For years, we have made a concerted effort to reduce environmental impacts and support the communities within which we work. But as the challenges of the world increase, we recognize there is an opportunity for us to do even more. There are a number of organizations we believe contribute positively to sustainable development and this page lists a selection of organizations with which we partner.
Each year, S&D hosts two major employee-based charity campaigns: The United Way of Central Carolinas and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). S&D also encourages holiday fundraising initiatives, blood drives, construction blitzes and volunteer time to aid many Cabarrus County organizations. We also support locally:
- Boys & Girls Club of Cabarrus County
- Ben Mynatt Children’s Foundation
- Cabarrus Meals on Wheels
On the national level, S&D supports a variety of organizations that impact communities in all of the areas we serve. The list of national initiatives includes:
- Ronald McDonald House Charities
- Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption
- Big Brothers Big Sisters
- The Jimmy Fund
- Dana Farber Cancer Institute
- Muscular Dystrophy Association
Café Femenino, a social program for women coffee growers in rural communities around the world, began with just over 400 women coffee farmers by paying an extra premium over the fair trade price directly to the women. S&D supports the Café Femenino Foundation through programs like FACES Foundation, a foundation that performs cleft palate surgeries. S&D provides funds to help with the transportation and housing needs for parents of children helped by the work of the FACES.
Grounds for Health
Grounds for Health is a social program focused on detecting, treating and curing cervical cancer in coffee growing countries, where cervical cancer kills more women than any other cancer. The Grounds for Health organization encourages partnerships between coffee companies, coffee cooperatives and local health organizations. Since its founding in 1996, over 30,000 women have been screened for cervical cancer. S&D is a proud supporter of Grounds for Health.
Coffee Quality Institute
The mission of CQI is to work internationally to improve coffee quality and the lives of the people that produce it through a variety of programs: Q Coffee® Trade, Q Grader™ Program, Coffee Corps® and Women in Coffee Leadership Program™.
International Women’s Coffee Alliance (IWCA)
IWCA strives to empower women in the international coffee community to achieve meaningful and sustainable lives; and to encourage and recognize the participation of women in all aspects of the coffee industry. The organization is focused on promoting possibilities for women in coffee communities throughout the world.
National Coffee Association (NCA)
Established in 1911, NCA’s core purpose is to champion the well-being of the United States coffee industry within the context of the world coffee community.
Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA)
The SCAA’s mission statement is to set the industry’s standards for growing, roasting and brewing by working with coffee retailers, roasters, producers, exporters and importers.
“We believe success should not be measured only by the bottom line, but also by how much you have been able to make a difference in the lives of those in your community.”
