We understand that a focus on corporate social responsibility and sustainability drives efficiencies, inspires innovation, builds a platform for long-term growth and assured supply, and keeps us accountable to our commitments and our customers. It is important to our business, our community and our planet. Our efforts are led by a team dedicated to all aspects of CSR and Sustainability.

Corporate Social Responsibility is an umbrella that covers employee development, recycling, water and fuel conservation, community engagement, industry leadership and ethical sourcing (non-commodities). At S&D, we embrace the collective responsibilities that come with being a successful business in the rapidly evolving marketplace. Like today’s consumers, we are fully aware of our impact on our world both as individuals and as a company.

At S&D, Sustainable Sourcing refers specifically to resilient supply chains for coffee and tea, and a sustainable supply chain is critical to the future of these global markets. That’s why Raíz Sustainability, S&D’s sustainable sourcing platform, is rooted in impact – in fact, the Spanish word raíz (pronounced rah-ease) literally translates to “root”.

Raíz Sustainability is rooted in impact, focusing on enriching, preserving and investing in the future of coffee and tea.

S&D partners with small and medium scale farmers, measuring progress and promoting continuous improvement. Ongoing collaboration with established industry leaders and local affiliates at origin are key elements to the program’s success.

In addition to our origin specific programs, S&D is proud to offer shade-grown coffees, which eliminate the need for excessive pesticides and synthetic fertilizers used on non-shade farms. By partnering with the Rainforest Alliance and the Smithsonian’s Bird Friendly initiatives, S&D is helping conserve the natural habitat around coffee farms, benefiting both the surrounding communities and the native wildlife that call those areas home.

In the end, our sustainable sourcing platform is designed as an entry point for all farmers, supporting their efforts to meet our company’s sustainability standards. Together we’re helping to build capacity, improve resiliency, invest in longevity, drive performance and deliver real impact on farm productivity.
